From The Blue Barns Aerodrome to Systematic Business Park

Back in 1931 John Howie who was then well known as “The Flying Farmer” purchased these lands in multiple sections and collectively named them The Blue Barns Aerodrome. This very place also became known as the Redwing Aircraft Co. Ltd sales depot covering all territory north of London; as such, all manufacturing was moved to this site.

For many years, it was the home of the Redwings aircraft factory, which moved its works from its original home in Croydon, before returning back there in 1939. The Croydon Aerodrome famously later became Gatwick Airport; London’s 2nd largest airport, whereas the Ardleigh airfield languished.

In 1942 it was considered as the site for a new WW2 airfield but a site in Langham was chosen instead. This site became probably the most important USAAF airfield of the war. We now know it as Boxted Airfield, though it lies in Langham! It was from here that American pilot, Samuel Batson, took off on December 30^th 1944, but his engine failed shortly after taking off and the aircraft crashed very close by at Wick Farm, Ardleigh which is adjacent to Systematic Business Park. Batson bailed out but was unfortunately too low for the parachute to deploy and was sadly killed.

The land was then owned and farmed for many years by the Hardy Kings, wealthy landowners throughout the Essex region, and well-known Estate Agents. Richard Triolo began to acquire these lands in four separate sections in 2000, in a far more complex process than John Howie experienced in 1931.

Richard began his career journey in 1985 as an apprentice. In 1992, aged just 22, he was voted onto the Board of Directors of Palletline Plc, the first UK pallet network. Two years later in 1994, he founded SLi and pioneered the pallet network sector for many years. Richard formed TCS in 2010, as a commercial business consultancy and received over 10 prestigious business awards including Essex Business of the Year and Essex Most Outstanding Businessperson.

Following the sale of his original logistics warehouse and surrounding development land, during the Covid lockdown, Richard considered what to do with Logistics House, his remaining investment at Systematic Business Park and the original Head Office of Systematic Logistics International, aka SLi. Reflecting on the daily stresses, compliance, and responsibility of managing an office space whilst trying to grow his business, he had an idea; why not create a superior environment where businesses were free from this distraction and able to fully focus all their energy on what they do best? From this idea “The Nexus” was born and he is extremely proud to have created a growth hub that offers superb facilities and a high-quality home to businesses that share his determination, systematic nature, and entrepreneurial flair.

We really are grateful that we found this space to work from for our business. We have rented two other spaces in Colchester and this is by far the best. Richard is always about to help, to make our business run that little bit smoother and he can not do enough to help you. The facilities are excellent and Richard really does care about all the small businesses within this building. Such a wonderful office space, with friendly tenants, amazing coffee and a beautiful gym space! At the Nexus they have amazing meeting facilities, including a full board room and meeting pods. Richard the Owner is so hospitable and really couldn't do enough for the tenants and their visitors - he regularly offers my guests a coffee! Highly recommend, great atmosphere!

I love the design of the offices and communal places. We made a decision that the time had come to have an office so we could centralise everything, We are now employing a customer Service manger, and an Office Manager, We looked at some on line and Nexus was the 1st one we went to see. To say it was an easy process is an under statement, Highly recommend these facility's for your business. Richard has bent over backwards to make my move happen, going over & beyond in every respect. I looked at many potential offices in the North Essex area and The Nexus cannot be beaten imo. I've worked at The Nexus since June and have been nothing but impressed with the facilities. The office location is excellent in terms of connections from the surrounding towns. My office is modern and beautifully decorated, as are the meeting pods and this gives a great impression for client appointments. On top of this there's a topnotch coffee machine and even a gym. Highly recommended!

We've been at the Nexus now since May 2023. We've already moved office to the new 'West Wing' which was recently developed so we could have more space.We've been really pleased with our time here so far. The nature of the 'all inclusive' package is what appealed to us most. For our monthly payment, which is more competitive than most solutions locally, we get parking, hot and cold drinks, a fridge (which is refreshed nightly), the gym, meeting rooms and a very flexible Landlord who has a keen eye for detail and has created a really creative and refreshing space to work.We'd recommend the Nexus to any local businesses looking for a great place to operate from.

Excellently equipped serviced offices. Some of the suites are really funk and bespoke. Excellent communal features, including wet room and GYM. Access is also fabulous, no need to get stuck in the traffic in the city center or Severalls. It has excellent access onto the A12 in both directions.

I had a tour of the Nexus with a view to offering Massage there, and was so impressed with everything about it. Each office is so unique and state of the art and the attention to detail is amazing, you can tell a lot of thought has gone into the furnishing. The living wall brings the outdoors inside which adds a really relaxing vibe to the offices, the gym has the best standard of equipment and very importantly the coffee is amazing! If I worked in an office this is exactly the kind of place I'd like to be. Plus its next to the A12 which is ideal.

The offices are smart, clean and the facilities are just great. It boasts some really nice features (Wet rooms, meeting pods - which are ideal for a quick and private meeting space, Gym equipment is top notch, brilliant Wi-Fi speeds and the coffee machine is amazing!).There is ample secure parking and access to the local town (soon to be City!) and other amenities are really easy. I would highly recommend The Nexus to small, medium or large businesses, it stands head and shoulders above similar serviced offices in the area.
